You practice to get better. And if results mean anything, and they do, moving from second place to first is a sure sign of improvement and achievement.
Pierre Baldwin practices his saxophone a lot.
The PSC Marine Biology student won first place in the Jazz Pensacola Student Jazz Competition’s Collegiate Instrumental category, besting five University of West Florida students.
The competition was held on March 21 at Seville Quarter in Downtown Pensacola.
In 2022, Baldwin placed second in the same event category.
This year’s win netted Baldwin a $500 cash prize.
“I’m really humbled,” he said, noting that he hoped to improve his standing over last year’s stellar performance. “It was a goal.”
He worked hard to achieve it too.
“I’ll go by a practice room, and he’ll be in there working on his chops and just trying to get better,” said Doug Holsworth, PSC Band Director. “He really loves playing. This is his last year here (at PSC). I’m going to miss teaching him.”
Baldwin said he hopes to continue his education at a four-year university.
He performs in the PSC Jazz Band and the Pensacola Civic Band.
“I want to continue performing,’’ he said of his musical goals. “It’s something I love.”
