The last three musical performances of the Spring 2023 Pensacola State College Lyceum series are this month.
New Orleans-based indie rock band Motel Radio will perform on Wednesday, April 19, while Kahlo Quartet, a Philadelphia-based chamber music group that mixes traditional classical music with Latin American influences, will perform on Thursday, April 20.
PSC’s Wind and Jazz Ensembles will perform on Wednesday, April 26. All three performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ashmore Auditorium on the Pensacola campus.
Motel Radio is touring to support its sophomore album, “The Garden,” released in 2022. The band has opened for acts ranging from the Drive-By Truckers to Kurt Vile. Motel Radio will perform at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on April 28.
“This is an opportunity for the College to host a great set of musicians just before they take off,’’ said Andrew Barbero, PSC Lyceum director and assistant professor of history.
“Right now, they are one of the premier up-and-coming indie rock bands in the South. The band’s new album is an amazing mix of melodic riffs, catchy vocals and deep tracks.”
Members of the Kahlo Quartet come from the United States, Cuba, Venezuela and Peru. For the Lyceum performance, the Kahlo Quartet will be accompanied by PSC adjunct piano instructor Benjamin Rollings for a performance of Antonín Dvorák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major.
“We are excited to see Professor Rollings collaborate with the youthful Kahlo Quartet,’’ said Ken Phillips, PSC Performing Arts director. “The ensemble’s commitment to classical and Latin American music promises an evening of exciting music making.”
Phillips said PSC has invited all Escambia County high school orchestra students to attend the concert for free.
Ticket prices for the Motel Radio and Kahlo Quartet concerts are general admission, $11; seniors and non-PSC students, $9; and PSC employees, $7.
The performances are free for Friends of the Performing Arts and PSC students.
There is no charge for the April 26 performance by the PSC Wind and Jazz Ensembles, conducted by Doug Holsworth, PSC Director of Bands.
