Pensacola State College business students Kadiyah Nelson, Haley Thompson, Kevin Weaver and Tacoryal White are Industry Champions of the Business Strategy Game (BSG®). This online simulation exercise assigns student teams to run an athletic footwear company in a head-to-head competition against rival companies managed by students from other colleges and universities.
The team-based learning exercise presents real-world decision-making in dynamic, competitive simulations, including market share, profit margin, brand reputation, stock price and earnings per share. Each team’s mission is to develop and execute a winning strategy in a global marketplace over several simulated years. Company operations parallel those of actual athletic footwear companies, and performance is judged against investor expectations and the best-performing company in the industry.
The Business Strategy Game is part of the capstone Strategic Management course in the Business and Management Bachelor of Applied Science program at PSC.
PSC’s A Alpha Athletics team achieved the maximum weighted average score of 110, tying for the top ranking with 19 other teams from 10 other colleges and universities, including The University of Alabama, Trinity Western University, Niagara College, Kasetsart University, Radford University, University of Houston-Clear Lake, Universidad de Lima, Wilmington University, Messiah University and Sheridan College.
“This team finished first in the world ahead of other larger schools, including teams from Alabama, Missouri State, Georgia State, Utah State, the University of Tennessee and others, and they received top international ranking among 3,203 teams from 131 colleges and universities participating in the simulation worldwide,” said PSC Assistant Professor Brian Ward, D.B.A., who teaches the team’s Strategic Management course.
“This achievement is not only meaningful for our academic and professional development, but it also reflects the strength of PSC’s business program,” said White, who will graduate in May with a B.A.S. in Business and Management with a concentration in Health Care Management.
“I would also like to acknowledge Dr. Brian Ward for his leadership and mentorship throughout the semester. His dedication, encouragement and belief that one of his teams would achieve Global Top 100 performance played a major role in our success.”
Team members were officially recognized within the BSG Central Global Top 100 performance rankings and received certificates documenting their achievement as co-managers of the firstplace company.
“Having this fantastic group of students finish in the top spot out of over 3,200 other teams is a testament to their hard work, as well as the rigor inherent in Pensacola State’s business program,” said Ward. “It was an honor to lead these students, and I could not be more proud of them.”
