Jeff Conner, the only original member of Boston Brass, will present his free entrepreneurial clinic, “The Portfolio Musician,” on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Pensacola State College.
Set for 4 p.m. in the college’s Ashmore Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus, “The Portfolio Musician” clinic is a companion to the book, “The Portfolio Musician, Case Studies in Success,” co-authored by Conner with Grammy Award-nominated musician, recording producer and university professor, John Laverty.
The clinic explores classical music, pop music, jazz, opera, conducting, composing, teaching, the music industry, artist management, studio recording and other fields of music. The clinic provides real world strategies including things to do as well as things not to do. It also examines the time frame for which a person decides to be a musician through formal music study.
Also, the “The Portfolio Musician” book and clinic stresses that contemporary musicians must have multiple music skills ─ unlike prior generations who only needed a single skill. By examining the profiles of contributing musicians, Connor and Laverty conclude this is sage advice.
Pensacola State and the local community join an impressive list of venues where Conner has presented the clinic, including The Yale School of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, Boston Conservatory of Music, Belmont School of Music and Syracuse University.
Conner founded the Boston Brass 31 years ago with some fellow Boston musicians while a student at Boston University and has engineered the meteoric rise of the ensemble’s fame in the world of popular chamber music.
In partnership with PSC and the Pensacola Civic Band, “The Portfolio Musician” is open to the public. Aspiring musicians who want to learn more about what it takes to become a professional musician are encouraged to attend.
