PSC instructor Jamey Jones’ stint as Poet Laureate ends soon
(But new books by Jones are on the way)
Pensacola State College English instructor Jamey Jones’ tenure as the seventh Poet Laureate of Northwest Florida ends in October after a two-term, six-year span as the region’s poetry ambassador.
But who knows? Maybe a future poet laureate is being taught by Jones right now. (The Poet Laureate of Northwest Florida is chosen by the West Florida Literary Federation.)
Jones, who teaches poetry, English composition and American and contemporary literature, has the teaching pedigree for sure. In 2019 Jones, who joined the College’s faculty in 2013, was inducted into the PSC Academy of Teaching Excellence.
But even though he “teaches” poetry, Jones admitted that art can be nurtured, but rarely properly “taught.”
PSC students win 27 gold, 29 silver Pensacola ADDYs gala
Pensacola State College visual arts students won 58 awards at the AAF Pensacola 2019 American Advertising Awards Gala held Feb. 16 at the Hilton Pensacola Beach.
Pensacola State students earned 27 gold and 29 silver ADDYs, a Student Judges Choice and a Best of Show awards.
In the professional division, Pensacola State Marketing Department graphic designers won three silver ADDYs.
Award-winning guitarist Tengyue Zhang to perform at PSC on April 12
The Pensacola State College Guitar Association will present Tengyue Zhang, grand prize winner of the 2017 Guitar Foundation of America’s International Concert Artist Competition, in concert on Friday, April 12.

More than 1,600 student-members will compete in the 2019 SkillsUSA Florida State Leadership and Skills Conference set for April 7-9 in Pensacola.

The Pensacola State College Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Awards. Awards will be presented at the inaugural Distinguished Alumni Awards Gala to be held on Saturday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. in the Jean and Paul Amos Performance Studio on the Pensacola campus.

Inaugural class of distinguished honorees to be named to PSC Athletics Hall of Fame
Pensacola State College will celebrate the Pirates’ rich athletic history with a ribbon cutting and induction ceremony for the ten-member inaugural class of the Pensacola State College Athletics Hall of Fame on February 16, 2019. The event will be held on the Pensacola State campus, 1000 College Blvd, Pensacola in the Hartsell Arena. An observance will take place between the women’s and men’s basketball games against Gulf Coast Community College, with a banquet for inductees and their guests immediately following the end of the game. The Lady Pirates game will begin at 5:30.
“Pensacola State has a long and storied sports and athletic tradition,” said Bill Hamilton, who was the head baseball coach at Pensacola State from 1990-2010 and has since served as the College’s Athletic Director. “This Hall of Fame will stand as a reminder for all time that these awesome individuals got their start here.”

Pamper Fido with a bath and a pedicure from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at Pensacola State College’s Warrington campus, Building 3200, 5555 West Highway 98.
Sponsored by college’s Veterinary Technology students, the dog wash services include a bath, nail trim, ear cleaning and anal gland expression.
Cost is $10 per bath and $5 for each additional service, $20 for all of the services.

Open to high school and college students, the four-state competition is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in Ashmore Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus. The competition will be open free of charge to the public.
PSC Club enjoys primitive camping trip at Nantahala National Forest
welve members of Pensacola State College’s Outdoor Club experienced the adventure of a lifetime June 4 -9 during a leadership and skill-building primitive camping trip to North Carolina.
The students, who were all relative strangers before the outing, worked together to set up campsites, climb mountains, hike trails, identify foliage and natural formations, explore old homesteads and navigate whitewater rafting on Standing Indian Mountain in the Nantahala National Forest.
Pensacola State ranks among most affordable colleges in U.S.
The U.S. Department of Education lists Pensacola State College as a best value among public four-year colleges and universities for the seventh consecutive year.
Pensacola State is ranked 37th on the list of 71 institutions cited for lowest tuition in the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency annual report. With annual tuition listed as $2,704, Pensacola State is eighth among the 25 Florida colleges to make the most affordable ranking.
Pensacola State, Pragda hosting 2018 Hispanic Film Festival
Illegal immigration, racism and homophobia are among the political and social issues to be addressed during this year’s Hispanic Film Festival at Pensacola State College.
Five Spanish-language films – “Carga Sellada,” “¿Quién es Dayani Cristal?,” “El Pelo Mado,” “El Aula Vacia” and “Neruda” – will be shown throughout April during the annual festival co-sponsored by Pensacola State and Pragda.

Pensacola State College will provide free dental services on Give Kids A Smile Day set for Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3, on the Warrington campus.
Available to underserved children in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, the college’s dental hygiene students and faculty along with Pensacola dentist, Dr. Neil Simmons, will provide preventive care ─ cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, and restorative services ─ fillings, extractions, crowns, etc.
Free VITA Tax Preparation and e-Filing service available to taxpayers
The Free VITA Tax Preparation and e-Filing services are now available on Pensacola State College campuses.
In existence for more than 10 years, the program provides free tax services to working families and individuals who earn less than $66,000 a year. Residents can receive quality service from IRS-trained tax preparers, and have two filing options – online or in-person.

PSC nursing students exceed state average on national licensure exam
Pensacola State College students in registered nursing (RN) and practical nursing (LPN) programs recently outscored their state counterparts on the National Council Licensure Examinations.
On the first attempt, PSC practical nursing students achieved a 91.7 percent pass rate and registered nursing students achieved an 85.3 percent pass rate on the NCLEX in comparison to statewide pass rates of 68.1 percent and 76.7 percent respectively.
AFC leaders visit Pensacola State College

Get ready for the Solar Eclipse Aug. 21
The sky is slated for a spectacular show – a total solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21. And you can see it for the simple price of looking up. Telescopes will be set up outside the PSC Planetarium from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 21. The partial eclipse begins at 12:05 p.m. and reaches maximum coverage of 82 percent at 1:37 p.m. The eclipse ends at 3:03 p.m. locally. Pensacola State College and the Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Bryan Lewallyn as the Pirates’ new head baseball coach.
Lewallyn, a former Pirate, has most recently been the head coach at the University of South Carolina – Beaufort, leading the Sand Sharks to three NAIA Regionals in five years, four Sun Conference Tournament appearances, one Sun Conference Championship and a 2012 NAIA World Series appearance.

For the fifth consecutive year, the U.S. Department of Education lists Pensacola State College as a best value among public four-year colleges and universities. Pensacola State is ranked 26th on the list of 68 institutions cited for lowest tuition in the DOE College Affordability and Transparency annual report. With tuition listed as $2,704, PSC is seventh among the 24 Florida colleges to make the most affordable list.
PSC Receives 5-Year Federal Grant for Educational Talent Search Program
Pensacola State College has received a $342,720 per year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to renew its Educational Talent Search (ETS) program. The five-year grant totals more than $1.7 million. ETS identifies and assists middle school and high school students, encouraging them to graduate from high school and then successfully enroll and complete college or vocational training.
Pensacola State College Hosts 2016 College Fair for High School Juniors and Seniors Sept. 11-13
More than 60 colleges and universities will have representatives providing information at the 2016 College Fair, Sept. 11 through 13, hosted by Pensacola State College, in conjunction with the Escambia and Santa Rosa County School Boards.
