Pensacola State College and the PSC Pirates CARE student resource and support program hosted the Carla Williams Domestic Violence Awareness & Remembrance Walk on Oct. 22 at the Pensacola campus track. The annual event honors the life and legacy of former PSC educator, coach and student-athlete Carla Williams while raising awareness about domestic violence.

Williams, an associate professor, assistant coach and former Lady Pirates basketball player, died in May 2021 as a result of domestic violence. A Florida State University basketball alumna, she dedicated more than 24 years of service to PSC through Athletics, Collegiate High School and the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.

Remembered for both her talent as a player and her commitment to mentoring and encouraging student-athletes on and off the court, Williams was posthumously inducted into the PSC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. Her legacy also continues through the Carla Williams Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established to support future generations of PSC student-athletes.

This year’s walk raised $1,285 for the scholarship fund, including close to $800 from T-shirt sales and a voluntary $10 registration fee. Nearly 200 participants took part in the event.

PSC Dean of Students Lynsey Listau oversees Pirates CARE, which connects students with resources and services that address barriers to academic success and personal well-being to help students thrive both in and out of the classroom.

“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and an important time to raise awareness and connect individuals with organizations that address domestic violence and support survivors,” Listau said. “It’s also a special time for our PSC family to reflect on the loss of Coach Carla Williams and remember her as a great PSC Pirate.”

The Carla Williams Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund now totals $35,214. To contribute, visit foundation.pensacolastate.edu/online-giving/scholarships.
