PSC Charter Academy Pirates to compete in district play starting this school year
The Pensacola State College Charter Academy is in the process of selecting a coach for the new girls soccer team, which will begin play this fall. Leading the search and preliminary setup for the new sports program is PSC Charter Academy Athletic Director Lyndsey Angus.
“I am excited about offering this opportunity for our Charter Academy students,” said Angus. “The school’s growing enrollment is at a level where there should be enough interest and talent to field a new team, and the girls will have joint use of the college’s brand new soccer complex.”
The new 6.7-acre facility for PSC’s NJCAA Region 8 Division I women’s soccer champions includes a lighted NCAA regulation field, with a scoreboard, concession stand, seating, restrooms and parking, at the corner of Underwood and 12th avenues, stated PSC President Ed Meadows. Meadows said that after the fall soccer season is over, construction will begin to complete the dressing rooms and press box. There is also interest in offering other sports teams for the Charter Academy.
Player selection will wait until the new coach is hired; however, PSC Charter Academy students are already being informed about the new soccer program through school communications and parent information sessions. Team tryouts will be open to girls in grades 9 through 12.
“Adding girls soccer is a big next step for us and reflects our commitment to providing a well-rounded educational experience that includes extracurricular activities and now athletics,” said Principal Karen McCabe, Ed.D. “In addition to soccer, we’re starting a co-ed esports team this year, which is another participation opportunity for our growing student population.”
Many PSC Charter Academy students earn college credits while still in high school, giving student-athletes wanting a rigorous program of study the chance to accelerate their academic careers. According to McCabe, 24 of the school’s 37 graduates last school year were awarded their high school diploma and an associate degree from PSC simultaneously.
“Our student-athletes will be able to earn their associate degree tuition-free, and they will leave high school prepared, both academically and athletically, for university transfer. That’s a unique opportunity and a huge factor for our community,” said Angus.
The PSC Charter Academy Pirates will compete within the Escambia County Public Schools district, with soccer season starting in November.
PSC Charter Academy enrollment for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year will remain open until all available seats have been filled for classes beginning Aug. 17. Parents can apply online at charteracademy.pensacolastate.edu.
