Arren Joseph-White
Those who know Arren Joseph-White know that this “soon-to-be” English major loves to write. Many may have shared space in Lit Club with Arren or read the third-year student’s work in The Kilgore Review or The Corsair student newspaper. Yet, despite their talent with words, Arren’s true passion lies in music.
“My lifelong wish was – and still is – to be a musician, a singer-songwriter. I love telling stories via music. I could go on about it forever, honestly,” they said.
A Pensacola native, Joseph-White has accomplished more than they once thought possible, thanks in part to an amazing support system. One of their proudest achievements so far is becoming the editor-in-chief of The Corsair, earning the trust and responsibility that comes with the role.
That accomplishment would be no surprise to Joseph-White’s late grandmother, a beloved teacher who passed a few years ago. “Whenever I do something, I like to think she’s proudly watching somewhere. If I succeed, I know she’s happy; and if I fail, I know she’s still happy because I gave it my all,” they reflected
Joseph-White fondly remembers their grandmother’s resilience and kindness, admiring how she approached life with love and determination. “She was stubborn, yes, but resilient and practically unstoppable. She was kind-hearted, too. She did everything with love,” Arren recalled.
Beyond writing and music, there are a couple of things that not everyone knows about Arren. First, their family name is Motiri, meaning “I’ve seen beyond the heavens.” Secondly, they love culinary arts. In fact, the family once thought they might pursue culinary school, but Arren admits that fears of getting burnt by oil nudged them to pursue a less flammable career path.
Food is still a big part of Arren’s journey, however. If someone were visiting for a day, they might take that friend to OG Lola’s or Nomadic Eats before thrifting around town and heading to the beach at sunset. “The sundown is gorgeous on the beach,” Joseph-White said, describing a favorite way to wind down the day.
Whether crafting a song, composing a story, or leading The Corsair’s editorial team, Arren Joseph-White approaches life with enthusiasm and authenticity. Pensacola State College is lucky to have this passionate storyteller and aspiring musician as part of its community.
