Mikenzie Francis-Opperman knows the importance of scholarships firsthand. Not only is she the Pensacola State College Director of Foundation Scholarships, but she also received scholarships while pursuing her own college education. Her experience makes the “I am PSC” campaign especially dear to her heart. In her role at Pensacola State College, Mikenzie has the unique privilege of working with the generous donors who fund scholarships for our students as well as with the deserving and grateful recipients of those scholarships. She truly understands the difference that scholarships can make.
Established during a 2002 visit with Former First Lady Barbara Bush, the Universal Scholarship has removed barriers to higher education for thousands of students across every program of study at the College.
Mikenzie shared, “The Universal Scholarship is one of the most important funds at the Pensacola State College Foundation: it helps students who may otherwise fall through the cracks because they aren’t eligible for other sources of financial support. The “I am PSC” campaign provides a wonderful opportunity to have your contribution to the Universal Scholarship matched, doubling its positive impact for students and their families. I am PSC, and I am proud to pay it forward so that others can have the same priceless opportunity to earn a college degree that generous donors afforded me years ago.”
Pensacola State College’s inaugural “I am PSC” campaign will run through December 5, 2024 to celebrate 75 years of academic achievement and community impact. This movement gives community members, volunteers, board members, alumni, faculty, staff and students the opportunity to support scholarships. Donors are enthusiastically supporting the goal to raise $75,000 for scholarships that will open doors and empower students! With a generous matching program, financial gifts will go twice as far. Every dollar donated to the Universal Scholarship up to $25,000 will be matched $1 for $1, helping even more students achieve their goals.
“The people — the faculty, staff, students, donors, board members, volunteers, alumni and community advocates — are what make Pensacola State College so special,” Mikenzie says. “When I moved to Florida five years ago, this PSC family welcomed me with open arms. I am deeply thankful for the opportunities, relationships and personal growth that PSC has provided me. Pensacola State College represents hope for a brighter future and provides the support needed to get there.”
Every campaign donor, regardless of gift level, is invited to enjoy the “I am PSC” celebration on Dec. 5th to celebrate being a part of this special initiative. Complimentary culinary delights will be served by students from the Pensacola State College Molly McGuire School of Culinary Arts. Those who give a campaign gift of $75 or more will also receive a limited edition, long-sleeve “I am PSC” t-shirt.
