Those who knew Carla Williams feel the profound loss of this Pirate legend who lost her life to domestic violence in May 2022. A standout Pensacola State College basketball player for two years, she was selected to play on All-Academic, All-Conference, and All-Region teams before playing at Florida State University. Williams later spent more than 24 years working in PSC athletics, Collegiate High and the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. She was inducted into the College’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022, and her jersey number 22 was retired in Jan. 2023.
The Pirates CARE Team invites faculty, staff and students to participate in “Wear Purple Day” on Thursday, Oct. 24 as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to come out to the PSC Track on the Pensacola Campus at 4:00 p.m. for The Carla Williams Domestic Violence Awareness and Remembrance Walk, where participants will walk 2.2 miles to raise awareness and to remember #22. Community organizations that provide services and resources related to domestic and dating violence will be joining the effort, including Gulf Coast Sexual Assault Program, Favor House, Legal Services of Northwest Florida, Tappan Consulting, and National Alliance on Mental Illness.
There is no cost to participate in the walk; however, those interested in supporting the cause can donate to the Carla Williams Endowed Scholarship Fund at https://athletics.pensacolastate.edu/Carla-Williams-Memorial-Scholarship-Fund
Questions about the walk can be sent to the Pirates CARE Team at PiratesCARE@pensacolastate.edu.
