Two Pensacola State College students have been named 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Scholars. Out of 1,900 applicants nationwide, Kimberly Bogers is one of 50 students honored as a Silver Scholar and Tammy Sutton is one of 50 students honored as a Bronze Scholar.
Sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, this recognition includes a $1,250 scholarship for each Silver Scholar and a $1,000 scholarship for each Bronze Scholar.
Bogers is Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Vice President for Public Relations and she also is an award winning writer, photographer and editor on The Corsair student newspaper staff. She was named the Florida College System Activities Association Publications Division Student of the Month for March because of her leadership role as Corsair editor.
Boggers graduates in May and begins her junior year at the University of Central Florida this fall, working on a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
“I am incredibly grateful to Pensacola State College and to the Theta Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa for this scholarship,” Bogers said. “It is definitely going to be put to good use when I begin attending nursing school in the fall. PSC has provided me with so many opportunities, and I am very thankful for that.”
Sutton graduated magna cum laude from PSC in December and is now at the University of West Florida majoring in social work. She was an active PTK volunteer on the Milton campus, particularly with the Lumberjack Festival, Craft Fair and gathering cards and socks for military veterans.
Her community involvement includes founding Courage to Tell, an educational outreach for the prevention of child abuse, and speaking at symposiums on human trafficking each fall.
“I am grateful and honored to be chosen as a Coca-Cola Bronze scholar,” Sutton said. “This is a gift that will truly help me in continuing my educational goals to fight human trafficking.”
Selection as a Coca-Cola Scholar is based on scores earned in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition. A panel of judges also consider outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service.
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society administers the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program. Colleges may submit no more than two nominations per campus for this award.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 states, U.S. territorial possessions and eight countries.
