Tyrone McMillan went over 900 miles away from Pensacola to college. About a year later, he returned home and found what he needed at Pensacola State College.
“Enrolling at PSC has turned out to be the best decision I have ever made,” said McMillan, a Robinson Honors Program officer and International Honor Society scholar.
McMillan was among Pensacola State’s finest ─ Presidential Scholarship recipients, Student Ambassadors and Robinson Honors Program officers ─ recognized at the annual President’s Reception held Feb. 29 in the Bear Jones Moore Reeves Center.
Now 23, McMillan enrolled in Pensacola State in the fall 2023 and now carries a 3.6 grade point average. He is the Robinson Honors Program vice president of Campus Outreach. He initially attended Chicago’s Concordia University on a football scholarship.
“After getting there, I realized I wanted to be a regular student,” explained McMillan, a 2020 West Florida High School graduate. “It was 2020, and there wasn’t a lot of football going on due to COVID. I dropped out and came back to Florida.”
Presidential Scholar McKenzie Alfred echoes McMillan’s sentiments – she also is a PSC success story. The 2023 Tate High graduate sports a 4.0 grade point average and plans to become a sonographer.
“I’m so thankful for this scholarship. It has made my transition from high school to college seamless,” Alfred said. “I love it here at PSC. It’s a great place to attend. The faculty members are invested in our success.”
Presidential Scholars received Presidential Scholarship Award medallions at the reception. Peighton Cobb, Kayla Disouryavong, Ethan Ellis, Landry Locklin, Steve Locklin, Nathaniel Marquez and Kenya McRae were other recipients.
Student Ambassadors Ashton Beeman, Christina Filipiak, Christina Hunter, Hope Lashley, Julie Olmedo, Elisabeth Stowers, Kaleigh Anne Villanueva and Caleb Wooden were given custom stoles.
Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 Robinson Honors Society officers honored included Damien Cruikshank, Hunter Ramos, Hannah Kilburn, Mikella Fain, Evamaria Castillo, Evan Klein, Yanos Ramos, Morgan Joiner, John McLeod, Morgan Joiner, Krystal Locke, Ivy Crosby, Kris Rafdahl and Heaven Lee. The officers were presented with Robinson Honors Society pins.
Brenda Kelly, associate vice president of academic affairs, welcomed the students to the reception. She also congratulated the scholars on their accomplishments. Troy Tippett, PSC Board of Trustees chair, and Grover Robinson IV (representing the Robinson Honors Program) lauded the students.
