For many juggling the costs of rent, food, car insurance and gas, and other basic needs, the dream of a college education feels out of reach due to rising costs. However, Pensacola State College is proving that higher education can be both accessible and affordable by providing substantial financial opportunities.
During the 2023-24 academic year, PSC awarded $25.2 million in scholarships and grants to nearly 5,000 students, ensuring that 72% of all degree or certificate-seeking students received financial assistance. This funding comes from federal, state and local governments, generous donations to PSC, and other local sources.
“This is a significant increase from the previous academic year when only 51% of students received scholarships or grants totaling $19.4 million,” said Michael Johnston, Associate Vice President of Institutional Research and Enterprise Solutions. “In just one year, PSC has increased the total grants and scholarships awarded by 31% while maintaining its 92% debt-free graduation rate,” he affirmed.
Additionally, 80% of all first-time students taking 12 or more credit hours (or 360 clock hours) in their first semester received grants or scholarships totaling $4.2 million. On average, first-time students each received $6,499 in financial aid over the academic year – without loans.
President Ed Meadows commended PSC’s Financial Aid Department for its dedicated efforts in securing increased federal funding to support students. “The vast majority of our students rely on some form of financial aid. While a significant portion comes from our Foundation scholarships, the bulk of our financial assistance is provided through federal and state aid. Without this support, many students would be forced to take out loans to attend college,” he explained. “Although PSC is in the top 1% of most affordable colleges in the nation, the financial aid we receive for students ensures that more than 90% of our students will continue to graduate debt-free.”
Through dedicated efforts, PSC remains a leader in providing accessible, affordable, high-quality education, ensuring students can “Go Here, Get There” without financial barriers.
