Choosing a career in nursing was an easy decision for Megan Doan of Pensacola.
Doan, who recently earned her associate in science degree in nursing, comes from a long line of healthcare professionals.
“My grandmother was a nurse, my father is a nurse, and my sister-in-law is a nurse,” Doan said following Pensacola State College’s Summer Pinning Ceremony held Aug. 3 at First Pentecostal Church of Pensacola.
“Nursing is a family tradition, so it was an easy decision,” said the 25-year-old who currently works as a licensed practical nurse at Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center.
“I work with oncology patients now, but I look forward to transitioning into a new role as an RN. I eventually want to become a nurse practitioner, so I have a lot more schooling ahead of me.”
Doan’s grandmother, Gwen Hughes, was not the least bit surprised at her granddaughter’s career path.
“When she was about 2 years old, I found her in the hallway with my stethoscope around her neck,” recalled Hughes, who earned her nursing degree in 1959 and worked as a registered nurse in hospitals in Indiana and Alabama for over 40 years.
Doan’s father, Steve Doan, was very proud of her. He is a registered nurse at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley.
“I’ve been a nurse for about five years, so I am so glad to have another one in the family,” he said.
Olivia Roberts, Doan’s sister-in-law, said she was glad Megan choose the career path and Pensacola State College.
“I’m a Pensacola State College Nursing Program grad and knew this was the right path for Megan,” said Roberts, who works at HCA West Florida Hospital.
Doan was among 44 Pensacola State students to earn associate in science in nursing degrees over the Summer semester. Twelve other nurses received Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.
