As Hurricane Matthew bears down on Cuba, the U.S. Navy evacuated military families from Guantanamo Bay to Pensacola Naval Air Station. An estimated 700 spouses and children from Guantanamo Bay Naval Station were flown in military cargo planes to Pensacola where they will remain until the Navy determines it is safe for them to return.
Fleet and Family Service Center counselors are providing assistance to the evacuees at Pensacola NAS, which has housed them in quarters there. This week, WSRE is opening up the PBS KIDS Imagination Station for these children and families to enjoy playing and having fun together. Parents will be given information and resources from Sesame Street’s special program about dealing with hurricanes, helping the adults to help young children to cope with their fears associated with a crisis.
WSRE is gathering games, books, crayons, coloring books and toys to share with these children and families who were evacuated from their homes quickly.
Can you help? Bring anything you would like to share to the WSRE Imagination Station Tuesday and Wednesday from 9-12 or to WSRE’s offices at 1000 College Blvd from 7:30 – 4:00 any day this week.

Many thanks for helping these military families feel welcome as part of our community.
