3 colleagues each have worked at PSC for 40-plus years
When Betty Freeney, Martha Weyels and Linda Winesett began their careers at Pensacola Junior College, word processors and Xerox copies were among the most innovative office equipment.
Many people don’t remember the archaic equipment today, but these employees do! The three have over 120 years of combined experience at the College and were among the 210 PSC administrators, faculty and staffers recognized at the 2024 Employee Service Awards.
The ceremony, held April 23 in the Jean and Paul Amos Performance Studio, honored employees with at least five years of continuous service.
Freeney – the longest-serving employee – began at the College as a clerk-typist in 1979. She is currently the Senior Storekeeper in Plant Operations, but also was a senior secretary and administrative secretary.
“When I started in my current department, it was known as Maintenance, then it became Facilities and Planning, and now it’s Facilities Planning and Construction,” recalled Freeney, a College alum who earned a Barbering Certificate in one of the program’s first classes.
A lifetime Association of Florida Colleges member, Freeney retired in 2009 but returned to PSC to work part-time until she became a full-time storekeeper in 2018.
“I think I’ve been here forever,” Freeney said. “When I started to work at PJC, T. Felton Harrison was the president,” she shared with a laugh.
Winesett joined the College in 1981 in public service careers as a secretary. She also worked as a clerk in the English and Communications Department. Later, she moved to the library, where she has remained for over 30 years.
“I have worked with some wonderful people. I think it’s a wonderful place to work,” said Winesett, a Library Acquisition Technician.
Weyels, a Library Serials Technician, remembers the exact date she joined the College ─ Oct. 17, 1983.
“I had seen a lot of changes, especially at the library when computers came along, and everything had to be transferred over,” she said. “I first worked in counseling for about a year and then moved to the library.”
A PJC alum, Weyels was a work-study student who liked the College.
“I just decided this would be a nice place to work. I finally got my foot in the door, and the rest is history,” she added.
