Twenty-one Pensacola State College students were honored at the annual 100 for 100 Campaign scholarship awards ceremony held March 8 in the Jean and Paul Amos Performance Studio at WSRE-TV.
African American Memorial Endowed Scholarships (AAMES) were awarded to Latarash Clark, Lakynda Curtis, Ziah Eubanks, Ashleigh Faucett, Radarian Robinson, Michelle Broadnax-Sullivan and Shunteia Turner.
Recipients of Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins “Live Your Dream” Endowed Scholarships were Lecia Bradley, Alyssa Buchanan, Marquiseya Cook, Brenda Davenport-Stanberry, Christopher Dawson, Imperial Harrell, Oneisha Jones, Joleigha Parks, Alquaisia Rome, Darlene Saulsberry, Jaquera Simpson, Tangela McCloud, Kjohana Wright and Kendaisia Heidelberg.
To fund the scholarships, the College launched a 100 for 100 Campaign where volunteers set a $10,000 annual goal by asking 100 people to donate $100 each.
“Due to the hard work and dedication of our 100 for 100 volunteers, the campaign exceeded its $10,000 goal by several thousand dollars,” said Dr. Rameca Vincent Leary, the College’s Director of Community and Special Initiatives.
“We are extremely grateful to those who donated to support the AAMES and Wiggins Endowed scholarships. These scholarships make a tremendous difference in the lives and educational outcomes of PSC students.”
Along with funds to help pay for tuition and books, the 2024 scholarship recipients were presented special awards sponsored by Darrell Nelson, owner of Favor Flavor Seafood Restaurant.
PSC Executive Director of Institutional Development Andrea Krieger also was on hand to congratulate the scholarship recipients.
The African American Memorial Endowment Scholarship started more than 20 years ago to honor Dr. Ellen Lett, a beloved PJC English instructor. A scholarship was created in her name. Later, the scholarship was expanded, and the name was changed to pay tribute to all deceased PSC African American employees.
Wiggins was the president of the all-black Booker T. Washington Junior College when it merged with then-Pensacola Junior College in 1965. He served as the PJC Director of Research until retiring in 1969.
The Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins “Live Your Dream” Scholarship was established in 2005. A resolute and well-respected Escambia County educator, Wiggins was an Omega Psi Phi Fraternity member. To honor his legacy, Vin Durant of the Beta Omicron chapter of the Omega Psi Phi congratulated the scholarship recipients.
100 for 100 Campaign volunteers ─ Trace Brown, Ingrid Davis, Evelyn Gant, Michelle Jones, Obi Kalu, Dr. Leary, Tilden Whitfield, Khaliah Williams and Dr. John Woods ─ were crucial to the campaign success.
The PSC Black History/Multicultural Committee presented the ceremony. Dr. Leary spearheaded the campaign. Dr. Tonie Anderson-Steele is the Black History/Multicultural Committee chair.
