| Catalog Description: |
This course provides a comprehensive overview of math concepts
essential to the practice of the pharmacy technician's skill set.
The course covers the systems of weight, measurement and
temperature, and the conversion from one system to another. Other
topics include fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percentages
and allegations. Emphasis is placed on the math skills needed to
calculate doses, drug quantity or volume, intravenous flow rates and
percentage concentrations. |

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to
accurately calculate dosages of pharmaceutical products.

| Course Learning Outcomes: |
1. The student will understand the need for mathematics in the
pharmacy technician profession and other health occupations.
2. The student will understand and perform basic mathematical skills.
3. The student will understand the conversion of clinical
measurements of numbers, time, and temperature.
4. The student will understand comparisons of measurements systems –
household, metric, apothecary systems.
5. The student will understand conversions between measurement
systems.
6. The student will understand interpretation of medication labels
and orders.
7. The student will understand calculation of solid oral doses and
dosages.
8. The student will understand the calculation of oral and parenteral
liquid medications.
9. The student will understand reconstitution of powders or crystals
into liquid medications.
10. The student will understand calculations of medications for
special populations based on body weight and patient age.
11. The student will understand calculation of medications measure in
units, milliequivalents, and percents of concentration.
12. The student will understand the calculation of medications for
intravenous use.
13. The student will understand the calculation of mixtures from
stock medications.
14. The student will understand the interpretation of physicians’
orders for dosages.
15. The student will have a basic understanding of business math for
pharmacy technicians.

Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the
