Catalog Description:
This course is designed to improve keyboarding skills and give the 
student a working knowledge of transcription equipment. Skill is 
gained in transcribing accurately all type of medical dictation with 
special emphasis on accuracy, medical terminology, confidentiality 
and mailable work.

Program Learning Outcomes:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an 
opportunity to develop accurate transcription skills that can be 
used in a variety of medical offices - private or group practices, 
clinics, hospitals, etc.  Students will transcribe an abundance of 
actual dictation from a variety of medical specialties using 
Microsoft Word. An empahsis is placed on the accurate transcription 
of a variety of medical reports - chart notes, history and physical 
exams, etc.

              
              
              
Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able 
to:
I.    Demonstrate appropriate use of transcription equipment. 
II.   Demonstrate appropraite use of medical terminology, English  
      terminology and English grammar in medical documents.
III.  Transcribe medical reports from the following specialties:
      .  Dermatology
      .  Urology
      .  Gastroenterology
      .  Orthopedics
      .  Cardiology
      .  Pulmonary Medicine
      .  Endocrinology
      .  Obstetrics & Gynecology
      .  Otorhinolaryngology & Ophthalmology
      .  Neurology

           
              
Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning 
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the 
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department. 
Detailed explanation is included in the expanded syllabus developed 
by the instructor for each section being taught.
              
GRADING:  Daily work 40%

                  B+  90 -  94
                  B   85 -  89
                  C+  80 -  84
                  C   70 -  79

                  F   Below 65

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Attendance is mandatory.  More than two absences 
may result in withdrawal from the course as outlined within teh 
policies of the college and the department.  Tardiness is very 
disruptive to the class and is strongly discouraged.  Three times 
tardy or "leaving early" is equal to one absence.  Following two 
absences there will be no makeup work accepted or makeup test given.

ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY:  All cell phones and beepers must be 
turned off during class.

MISSED ASSIGNMENTS:  The student is responsible for speaking with 
the instructor and/or another student to find out about missed 
assignments.  Makeup Work will be allowed at the discretion of the 
instructor, and absolutely, no more than one makeup test will be 
given.  All work must be made up within one week of the date of 
absence.
 
CLASS DISRUPTIONS:  It is disruptive to students and hinders 
learning when two or more students talk among themselves in class 
when inappropriate, therefore.
.  students should not talk among themselves when isntructor or 
   classmate is speaking.
.  any student disrupting the class will be asked to leave the
   classroom.  Repeated violations will result in withdrawal from
   the course.
 
THE STUDENT MUST MAKE A "C" OR BETTER TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THIS 
COURSE.

Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.
