Comments:
Catalog Description:
Focuses on the application of the theories, concepts, and principles 
of leading and managing.  Emphasis in the course will be on the 
development of skills needed for effective leadership and 
management.  Opportunities will be provided to demonstrate 
appropriate leadership and management ability.

Special Requirements: Must successfully complete a drug screening and background check. Students may not attend any clinical facility before documentation of complete satisfactory drug screening and background check. Students will be allowed to choose from a list of contracted agencies that must be approved by the course instructor. A log of hours completed in the clinical setting will be maintained by the student for submission to the instructor at the end of the practicum course.

By the end of this course, the student will:

1. Analyze the use of current leadership and management research in 
the delivery of health care.  

2. Recognize critical thinking skills and decision making strategies 
used by nursing leaders and managers.

3. Distinguish legal and ethical principles to leadership/management 
situations.  

4. Use data to monitor the outcomes of care processes and use 
improvement methods to design and test changes to continuously 
improve the quality and safety of health care systems.

5. Participate in structuring the work environment to facilitate 
integration of new evidence into standards of practice

6. Function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, 
fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-
making.

7. Examine the role and responsibilities of the nurse leader/manager 
in the development, management, and use of financial resources

Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning 
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the 
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department.  
Detailed explanations are included in the expanded Syllabus 
developed by the instructor for each section being taught.
Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.

Student Email Accounts: Pensacola State College provides an institutional email account to all credit students. Pirate Mail is the official method of communication, and students must use Pirate Mail when communicating with the College. In cases where companion software is used for a particular class, emails may be exchanged between instructor and student using the companion software.
