|Catalog Description:||This course includes a focus on theories, concepts, and principles of leading and managing as well as pertinent legal issues faced by nursing leaders and managers. Emphasis will be on the methods to become an effective leader/manager including interpersonal skills needed for effective leadership and management, the different types of organizations delivering health care, outcomes management, and analysis of current research findings. 45 contact hours. 3 c.c.|
|Special Requirements:||Special Requirements: Any students whose disabilities fall within the Americans with Disabilities Act or section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act should inform Disability Support Services (DSS) at the beginning of the term of any special needs or equipment necessary to accomplish the requirements Must successfully complete a drug screening and background check within three weeks of beginning a clinical experience. Students may not attend any clinical facility before securing clearance from the nursing administration. Students will be allowed to choose from a list of contracted agencies that must be approved by the course instructor. A log of hours completed in the clinical setting will be maintained by the student for submission to the instructor at the end of the practicum course.|

Course Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, the student will: 1. Classify leadership and management principles and theories appropriate for different types of organizations delivering health care. 2. Assess the impact of organizational structures, mission and philosophy on leadership and management processes in nursing. 3. Examine how the safety, quality and cost effectiveness of health care can be improved through the utilization of principles and theories of leadership and management. 4. Describe factors that create a culture of safety (such as, open communication strategies and organizational error reporting systems). 5. Evaluate relevant research on leadership and management. 6. Analyze legal and ethical issues that impact on leadership and management in nursing. 7. Describe quality assurance processes used in understanding causes of error and allocation of responsibility and accountability. 8. Recognize the time, effort, and skill required to integrate computers, databases and other technologies as effective tools for patient care. 9. Describe basic principles of consensus building and conflict resolution.
|Methods of Evaluation:||Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the instructor, within the policies of the college and the department. Detailed explanations are included in the expanded Syllabus developed by the instructor for each section being taught.|
|Flexibility:||It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.|

Pirate Mail is the official method of communication, and students must use Pirate Mail when communicating with the College. In cases where companion software is used for a particular class, emails may be exchanged between instructor and student using the companion software.|
