Catalog Description:
Overview of the skills needed to read, understand, evaluate, and use 
nursing research.  This course focuses on research methods and the 
identification of researchable nursing problems.

By the end of this course, the student will:

1. Examine the history and progress of the discipline in nursing 
research.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of basic scientific methods and processes.

3. Describe EBP to include the components of research evidence, 
clinical expertise and patient/family values.

4. Describe how the strength and relevance of available evidence 
influences the choice of interventions in provision of patient 
centered care.

5. Discuss the legal and ethical parameters in conducting research 
with human subjects.

6. Critique research studies; Differentiate clinical opinion from 
research and evidence summaries.

7. Demonstrate ability to access reliable sources for locating 
evidence reports and clinical practice guidelines, including peer 
reviewed journals and databases.

8. Use charts and graphs to interpret and explain data.
Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning 
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the 
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department.  
Detailed explanations are included in the expanded Syllabus 
developed by the instructor for each section being taught.
              
              
Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.

Student Email Accounts: Pensacola State College provides an institutional email account to all credit students.
