Catalog Description: |
No previous musical experience necessary. A course for the
inexperienced music listener in which the emphasis is on listening. A
survey of music from the beginning to the present, introducing the
student to various types of music through the use of recordings.
Meets A.A. general education Category V.

Program Learning Outcomes: |
Students will develop a working knowledge of the elements of music,
such as instruments and voices, meldoy, harmony, form and
terminology. Students will have an understanding of the evolution
of
musical styles through six historical style periods.

developing informed opinions or defensible conclusions.
2. Communication: The student effectively communicates knowledge and
ideas.
5. Cultural Literacy: The student demonstrates an understanding of

Course Learning Outcomes: |
Students will have a basic knowledge of simple musical terms, forms,
and the musical instruments. Students will be familiar with the six
major periods in music and important composers and compositions.
Students will know how to approach a concert and its program.

Methods of Evaluation: |
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department.
Detailed explanation is included in the expanded syllabus developed
by each instructor for each section being taught.
Tests: Four equal 100-point tests; the fourth will be a
comprehensive
final. These tests may include questions of the following types:
matching, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks, definition, or essay
type questions.
Listening Requirement: Listening is an essential part of this course.
Therefore, each student is expected to devote adequate time
listening
to those recorded musical compositions which have been assigned. The
second and third test, as well as the final exam, will contain a
listening section that counts thirty percent (30%) of your final
grade for that test.

It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.
