Catalog Description:
This course consists of the study of the characteristics and 
activities of microorganisms; survey of microbial groups with 
emphasis on pathogenic forms; theories of destruction, removal and 
inhibition of microorganisms; relationships between infection, 
immunity and allergy. While the course is recommended for student 
nurses and dental hygienists, students in other programs will be 
admitted.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able
to:
Tell the contributions of key people in the field of
microbiology.
State the germ theory of disease and tell the importance of
Koch's Postulates.
Describe the use and characteristics of different types of
microscopes and describe techniques used in medical
microscopy.
Describe the differences between eucaryotic and procaryotic
cells.
Explain the types of metabolic processes found in
microorganisms.
Describe factors involved in the growth and inhibition of
growth of microorganisms.
Tell the distinguishing characteristics of bacteria, fungi, and
protists involved in disease, as well as the disease caused.
Describe how viruses are involved in causing disease.
Explain the existing relationships among infection and
immunity.
Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning 
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the 
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department.

by the instructor for each section being taught.
Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.
