Catalog Description:
The study of medical terminology as the language of medicine 
including the study of prefixes, suffixes, word roots, with emphasis 
on spelling, pronunciation, definition, and usage.

Program Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student shall be able to:
  1. Spell, define and pronounce a given list of medical elements.
  2. use word roots to form words using appropriate prefixes and suffixes.
  3. Define a medical term by breaking the term down into its basic component parts.
  4. Differentiate between or among similar word elements.
  5. Use correct forms of medical words according to context.
  6. Describe body structures using correct anatomical, positional and directional terms.
  7. Given the definition of a medical condition or surgical procedure, construct a medical term using word elements outlined in the text and lectures.
  8. Acquire an understanding of the relationship between lay terminology and medical terminology.
  9. Given terms specifically related to each body system and medical specialty; correctly spell, pronounce and define each term.
  10. Use a medical dictionary and glossary to verify spelling, pronunciation, and meaning of medical terms.
Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Divide medical terms into their component parts of root words, prefixes, suffixes and combining forms.
  2. Find the meaning of combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes using a glossary and medical dictionary.
  3. Use combining forms, prefixes and suffixes to build medical terms.
  4. Recognize misspelled terms when given a list correctly and incorrectly spelled terms.
  5. Write medical term when given its meaning.
  6. Read medical reports using correct pronunciation of medical terms.
  7. Mark the accented syllable in medical terms.
  8. Identify terms that are pronounced alike but spelled differently with different meaning.
  9. Translate medical case studies into lay language.
  10. Describe disease processes and symptoms for the body systems studied.
  11. List laboratory tests and clinical procedures for the body systems studied.
  12. Explain laboratory tests and clinical procedures for the body systems studied.
  13. Write the meaning of the medical abbreviations in the abbreviations list.
  14. List pathological conditions when given their meaning.
  15. Recognize the use and interpretation of various diagnostic tests.
  16. Differentiate among several types of pathological conditions of the body systems studied.
  17. Use a medical dictionary to expand the understanding of medical terms beyond basic word analysis.
Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning 
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the 
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department. 
Detailed explanation is included in the expanded syllabus developed 
by the instructor for each section being taught.
              
              
Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.
