Catalog Description:
Examination of health information systems with focus on analysis of 
applications for information systems in the health care delivery 
system. Emphasis will be placed upon skills necessary to employ the 
methods used to evaluate a variety of types of information systems 
applications in a health care setting.

Program Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the program students will:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes necessary to effectively manage fiscal, human, and physical resources in a health care setting.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of current issues and trends in a changing health care environment.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of current computer technology used in a health care setting.
Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the successful student will 
demonstrate an understanding of:
1.  The various definitions of health care information.
2.  The role of data and information in a health care system, and 
importance of quality, accuracy and timeliness.
3.  The history and evolution of health care information systems.
4.  Health care standards, licensure, and accreditation.
5.  Information technology that supports health care information 
6.  The role of management in aligning information technology 
initiatives with organizational goals.
7.  Legal and ethical aspects of patient medical records and patient 
8.  The life cycle of information systems and the approach for 
acquiring new systems.
9.  The use of emerging technology in the health care 
Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning 
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the 
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department.  
Detailed explanations are included in the expanded Syllabus developed
by the instructor for each section being taught.
Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.

Student Email Accounts: Pensacola State College provides an institutional email account to all credit students. Pirate Mail is the official method of communication, and students must use Pirate Mail when communicating with the College. In cases where companion software is used for a particular class, emails may be exchanged between instructor and student using the companion software.
