Catalog Description:
Orientation to medical records, history, professional associations, 
and ethics; introduction to confidentiality; medical record content, 
format, evaluation, and use; numbering, filing, indexing, storage,

Program Learning Outcomes:
Upon the completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
  1. Understand the history of medical records and health information.
  2. Understand the health information management profession and associations.
  3. To understand content of health records in various settings.
  4. Gain knowledge of health care data, structure, content and use.
  5. Understand analysis of completeness of the patient record.
  6. Understand various roles and disciplines in the healthcare environment.
  7. Distinguish between primary and secondary data.
  8. Identify data sets, databases, number, filing, and various indexing systems.
  9. Identify documentation requirements for patient records.
  10. Understand the patient's right to privacy and the requirements for maintaining the confidentiality of protected health information.
Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of professional practice standards.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of health record content, structure and uses.
  3. Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of patient records.
  4. Perform data collection and review of health records.
  5. Verify the accuracy and completeness of health records.
  6. Demonstrate skill at interpretation of medical record content, filing procedures and assembling health records.
  7. Demonstrate skill at designing forms for data collection of patient-related and/or other data.
  8. Demonstrate proficiency in record management systems.
  9. demonstrate the advantages of electronic health records over paper-based and hybrid health records.
Methods of Evaluation:
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning 
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the 
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department. 
Detailed explanation is included in the expanded syllabus developed 
by the instructor for each section being taught.

Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor.
