Catalog Description: |
FA, SP, SU - Focuses on the physical, cognitive, emotional and
social theories of how children grow and develop from conception
through adolescence and examines the role of adults in promoting
optimum development of children. Fulfills a portion of the required
120 hours of training for the Florida Child Care Professional
Credential (FCCPC) or a National Child Development Associate (CDA)
and includes 10-clock hours of observations

Special Requirements: |
Students are required to complete 10 hours of service learning in an
early childhood educational setting.

Program Learning Outcomes: |
1. Design an environment that fosters optimal growth and development
in young children.
2. Identify the challenges for teachers and families that are
associated with the child’s family socio-economic status, diverse
culture and family structure, and special needs and disabilities.
3. Identify and discuss characteristics of physical, intellectual,
language, emotional, and social development throughout each stage of
a child’s development.
4. Identify and demonstrate age-appropriate behavior management
strategies for young children.
5. Design a child development center based on the principles of
providing and administrating a quality early childhood environment
and program.

Course Learning Outcomes: |
Upon successful completion of DEP 2001, the student will:
1. List genetic and environmental influences which occur during
prenatal development.
2. Explain the birth process including complications, their causes,
effects, and treatments.
3. Compare and contrast the major theories in child development.
4. Examine the findings of current research regarding the
challenges associated with poverty, special needs, disabilities, and
gender roles regarding the development of children.
5. Describe characteristics of physical, cognitive, language and
social/emotional development during the infant, toddler, preschool,
and school age years.
6. Explain the influence of cultural diversity regarding parenting
styles and communication between parents and professionals working
with children.
7. Explain how children develop a sense of racial identity and
gender during childhood and adolescence.
8. Select resources for meeting the needs of children, particularly
those with disabilities or associated with abuse and neglect.

Methods of Evaluation: |
Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the
instructor, within the policies of the college and the department.
