Clinical and laboratory instruction is presented and coordinated with 
didactic instruction, with an emphasis on the comprehensive treatment

Upon completion of this course, students will have received all
didactic information necessary for the performance of expanded 
functions which are delegable in accordance with the Florida State
Dental Practice Act.
              
              

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Through assigned readings, handouts, demonstrations, laboratory and 
clinical practice, the student will be able to:

1.   Assess periodontal status of patients through recognition of 
     normal and pathologic periodontium as recorded on individual 
     dental/periodontal charts, and correlate the information to 
     radiographic findings.

2.   Develop comphrehensive treatment plans for patients with various
     classifications of gingival and/or periodontal disease.

3.   Demonstrate advanced techniques in instrumentation utilizing 
     alternative grasps, fulcrums, calculus removal techniques, 
     ultrasonic scalers and air polishers.

4.   Demonstrate asessment, scaling and root planing techniques, and 
     evaluation of furcations areas.

5.   Demonstrate the application of chemotherapeutic agents utilized 
     in dental hygiene treatment.

6.   Demonstrate the technique for the utilization of diagnostic 
     tests used in comprehensive dental hygiene assessment.

ATTENDANCE:
The attendance policy is addressed in the college catalog.
There are no excused absences from lectures or labs. Any missed
lecture will require a consultation with instructors. Withdrawal
from the course will result if three (3) lectures and/or labs are
missed. There are no provisions for make-up lecture, labs or
clinics.

DRESS CODE:
Proper attire for labs and clinics as addressed in the dental hygiene 
clinic manual, will be required. Failure to do so will result in one 
(1) point per infraction, deducted from competencies.

PROFESSIONALISM:
Professionalism is addressed in the Program and Clinic Manual. 
Infractions will result in point deductions from competencies and / 
or daily evaluation.

Daily grade evaluations will be used on all clinic sessions. Students 
who do not attend a session will receive a 0/6. Students who do not 
seat patient will receive a maximum of 3/6.
1.   Examinations will require a Scantron Sheet and a #2 lead pencil.
2.   Exams cannot be scheduled early and there are no exceptions.
3.   After the final examination, there will be no further 
     opportunities to raise the final grade earned.

     112 total points possible - Must have a minimum of
     84 points to receive a 75%


GRADING SCALE:
     95 - 100 = A     90 - 94 = B+      85 - 89 = B
     80 -  84 = C+    75 - 79 = C       70 - 74 = D+
     65 -  69 = D     64 --   = F

A grade of 75% or higher is required for program continuation.

SPECIAL ATTENTION: Students requiring classroom accommodations or

need with the instructor at beginning of the semester.
