Catalog Description:
This course is a continuation of DEH 1002 with an emphasis on 
preventive oral hygiene techniques and procedures. Topics of study 
include instrument sharpening, introduction to patient assessments 
and case building, dental charting (manual and electronic), 
medical/dental emergencies, patient communication, cultural 
diversity, oral malodor, introduction to tobacco cessation, patient

Course Learning Outcomes:
1.  Demonstrate proper procedures for the management of medical and 
dental emergencies.
2.  Discuss the development and implementation of an office 
emergency routine.
3.  Explain the legal considerations governing medical and dental 
emergencies. Discuss ethical problems that may arise in Pensacola 
State  dental hygiene clinic and private practice.
4. Accurately chart the existing oral health status of selected case 
studies using dental charting procedures both manually and 
electronically.
5.  Recognize appropriate charting symbols.
6.  Utilize specific techniques in communicating with patients.
7.  Set up, operate, and maintain ultrasonic instrumentation 
equipment.
8.   Understand communication difficulties with dental patients.
9.    Utilize appropriate techniques in communication with patients.
10.  Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patients with 
cultural differences.
11.  Understand Malodor Diagnosis with specific treatment regimens.
12.  Understand components of creating a Patient Case Study.
13.  Value the need for sharp instruments and demonstrate sharpening 
techniques.
14.  Compare and contrast different types of sharpening stones.
15.  Explain the care and maintenance of all varieties of sharpening 
stones.
16.  Demonstrate in clinical lab the steps to sharpen each of the 
following instruments:  sickles, Gracey curets, universal curets, 
and explorers.
17.  Understand the concepts of patient assessment including 
anticipatory guidance principles of health outcomes with patients in 
each life stage.
18.  Understand the relationship of biological, psychological and 
social factors as aspects to patient care.
19.  Determine a working definition for the following terms:  
intervention, oral risk assessment, prevention, risk and risk 
assessment.  Understand patient centered oral care.
20.  Cite examples of therapeutic intervention in dentistry.
21.  Describe the benefits of oral risk assessment to 
individualizing preventive and therapeutic strategies.
22.  Understand patient dental anxieties and control methods.
23.  Understand communication styles in cross cultural settings.
24.  Understand concepts of domestic violence, abuse and neglect and 
how it relates to preventive and treatment strategies in care of the 
dental patient.
25.  Explain the role of the dental hygienist in abuse and neglect 
cases in dentistry.
26.  Understand the challenges of the patient who uses tobacco and 
learn cessation concepts as it relates to clinical patient care.
              
Methods of Evaluation:
GRADE DETERMINATION:

The final grade in the lecture component of DEH1800 will be based on 
a point system. Students may figure their average at any time by 
dividing their points earned by the total number of points.

Total lecture points are subject to change during the semester and 
the final total points will be used for percentage computations. 
This course and its content are subject to change at the discretion 
of the instructor at any time. The instructor will notify students 
of any changes as soon as possible.				
				

The final percentage will be converted to a grade according to the 
following scale:

95 – 100% = A
90 - 94% =  B+
85 - 89% =  B
80 - 84% =  C+
75 – 79% =  C
70 – 74% =  D+
65 – 69% =  D
0 - 64% =   F  
                                                        
Successful completion of this course requires a 75% or higher for
