Catalog Description:
This is a survey course consisting of lectures and demonstrations
covering the basic structures and functions of the human body. It is
not recommended for students who intend to major in biology,
medicine or registered nursing.

Program Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
  1. Discuss the organization of the human body at the chemical, cellular, tissue and organ level.
  2. Discuss homeostatic mechanisms as they relate to health and disease.
  3. Identify the major structures and their functions of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.
  4. Describe the interrelationships between skin, bone, muscle and joints in the support and movement of the body.
  5. Describe the functions of the nervous and endocrine systems in maintaining homeostasis.
  6. Discuss the role of the nervous and endocrine systems in communicating internally.
  7. Describe the roles of the cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive and urinary systems in maintenance of normal body function.
  8. Describe pH, fluid and electrolyte homeostasis.
  9. Describe basic metabolic mechanisms. Describe reproduction, growth and development.

Evaluation of student progress towards achieving the stated learning
outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the

Flexibility: It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.
