AST1002W Descriptive Astronomy
||An optional laboratory course designed to illustrate the laws and
principles presented in AST1002. Includes computer simulations,
Internet astronomy, and calculations using the latest research. A
working knowledge of arithmetic and simple algebra is required.

|Program Learning Outcomes:
To experience the application of abstract general physical principles
to actual astronomical bodies, using current data gained from
Hipparcos, Hubble Space Telescope, and NASA.
To exercise math skills and enhance computer literacy through
application of algebraic formulae to complex astronomical problems.
To learn to use a variety of astronomical software for practical
observation, such as preparing nightly sky charts, plotting planetary
and cometary motions, and mapping the distribution of various types
of objects within the Milky Way Galaxy.
To become familiar with the Internet as a powerful tool for
scientific research in the 21st century and use it to find nightly
satellite observing data, updates on new discoveries, NASA links, and
local astronomical resources for educators and amateur astronomers.
To point out inadequacies in our present knowledge, limitations in
our current data, and forecast directions for new research..
To give the student a better respect for his/her own unique place in
