Authorized by the Affordable Care Act, the Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG) program provides education and training to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income individuals for occupations in the health care field that pay well and are expected to either experience labor shortages or be in high demand.

The Health Profession Opportunity Grant (HPOG) program is a demonstration project funded by the Federal government. The primary goal of this project is to provide training and support to help people improve their skills and find better jobs. In order to learn what works, the Federal government is conducting a study requiring every person eligible for HPOG to be selected through a lottery system. Those not selected through the lottery will not be able to participate in HPOG, but will be able to enroll in any other services or programs for which they are eligible.
